Our story
Great Move Chess Academy began in 2015 with a simple conviction: chess rewards the same qualities that serve people everywhere — patience, honest self-assessment, and the willingness to think one move further than feels comfortable.
What started with a small group of students has grown into a structured academy running beginner through advanced programmes, both in person in Visakhapatnam and online. The format has changed over the years; the approach has not. We still teach in small batches, still build each player's plan around where they actually are, and still measure success by how well a student thinks — not just what they score.

Great Move Chess Academy is a chess coaching academy based in Visakhapatnam, teaching students in person and online since 2015. We coach complete beginners who have never played a game, club players who want to understand why their moves work, and competitive juniors preparing for rated events — each in the programme that matches their real standard.
Most students train in small batches. Players who want faster, more specific progress — or who are preparing for a particular event — work one-on-one with a coach instead. Sessions run in person at the Academy and live online, so a student who moves cities, or lives outside Visakhapatnam, does not have to start over somewhere else.

The Academy opens
Great Move Chess Academy is founded in Visakhapatnam, with a handful of students and a single teaching board.
- 2016 – 2019
Structured coaching takes shape
Beginner, intermediate and advanced tracks are formalised, built around how students actually progress rather than a fixed syllabus.
- 2020 – 2022
Coaching goes online
Live remote sessions open the Academy to players beyond Visakhapatnam, without diluting the small-batch format.
- 2023 – 2025
Competitive focus deepens
Tournament preparation becomes a core part of the programme, with students entering district and state-level events.

Hosting state-level chess
The Academy organises the 1st Narasimha Murthi Memorial — AP State Open Chess Tournament.
